French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI announced today that it will invest 1.2 billion euros ($1.43 billion) in new data centers in Sweden, Reuters reported. Arthur Mensch, CEO and Co-Founder of Mistral AI, stated that this investment represents a concrete step toward developing independent AI capabilities in Europe.
Swedish data center operator EcoDataCenter will be responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the new infrastructure. According to EcoDataCenter, the large-scale computing capacity is scheduled to become operational in Sweden in 2027 and will support Mistral AI’s next-generation AI models.
This marks Mistral AI’s first infrastructure investment outside of France. The initiative is part of the company’s strategy to maintain its technology and cloud servers within Europe, distinguishing it from main competitors such as U.S.-based OpenAI.
